040314 Pancake bells and rotundas

040314_LRThe word of the day was pancake bell, which is ‘A bell rung on Shrove Tuesday at or about 11 a.m., popularly associated with the making of pancakes’ (OED). The casual observer may be forgiven for thinking that this looks more like an afanc designed by Christian Lacroix (sweetie), than a pancake bell and they would be correct. However, there is a link … albeit somewhat shaky. One of the examples of usage refers to the pancake bell at the Rotunda Museum. And this museum – the Museum of London – is certainly a rotunda. Ergo, with a little imagination, we can hear the pancake bell tinkling in the background.

Day #64 of a 365 project, where the daily pic is informed by the OED word of the day.
